About Cowrie
Cowries have smooth, glossy, porcelain-like shells with rounded or ovoid shape and a narrow columellar lip. Coloration varies by species from pale white or cream to richly patterned browns, blacks, and oranges, often with distinctive spots or bands; the living animal retracts completely into the shell.
Key facts
- Compatibility
- Cowries are peaceful and compatible with most reef fish and invertebrates. They may occasionally consume very small invertebrates or compete for food with other detritivores, but cause no deliberate harm.
- Diet Details
- Omnivorous grazers that consume algae, detritus, and organic matter on substrate and rockwork. Feed supplemental dried seaweed or spirulina if natural food sources are insufficient.
