Appearance
The Compressed Toby is a small pufferfish with a laterally compressed body, yellowish coloration with darker reticulated markings or spots. It has a blunt face and small pectoral fins, and can inflate itself as a defense mechanism when threatened.
Difficulty Level
Moderately challenging for hobbyists. Canthigaster species are hardy but can be aggressive toward tankmates and may nip at invertebrates, making them unsuitable for most reef setups. They require stable water conditions and careful tank selection.
Care Requirements
• Minimum 30 gallon tank • Temperature range 72–78°F • Salinity 1.023–1.025 SG • Provide shelter (rockwork, caves) and maintain strong water quality with regular partial water changes • Keep singly or in pairs only; highly aggressive toward other puffers and may harass peaceful fish • Not suitable for reef aquariums due to predation on invertebrates and corals
Common Health Issues
Ich, bacterial infections, intestinal parasites, aggression-related injuries in crowded tanks
Care Level
Moderate
Feeding Schedule
