Diet Details
In captivity, feed a varied omnivorous diet including high-quality flaked foods, frozen mysis shrimp, small crustaceans, and occasional vegetable matter. This species is known to pick at coral polyps and anemones in the wild, so live rock with established microfauna helps provide natural grazing opportunities.
Origin
Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea and East Africa through the Indian Ocean to the Great Barrier Reef and central Pacific, including the Hawaiian Islands and other tropical reef systems.
Care Requirements
• Tank size: 70+ gallons (minimum), preferably 90+ for a mated pair • Water parameters: pH 8.1–8.3, salinity 1.023–1.025, temp 75–79°F • Setup: Plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter; moderate water flow • Diet: Omnivorous; feed quality flake, pellets, small frozen foods, and occasional algae-based fare • Behavior: Semi-aggressive toward similar butterflyfish; pair-bond if introduced together
Feeding Schedule
2-3 times daily
Diet
omnivore
Difficulty Level
Moderately difficult. While not as hardy as some reef fish, the Lined Butterflyfish is more adaptable than many of its cousins. Success depends on excellent water quality, stable conditions, and a varied diet that replicates natural grazing behavior.
